TALES FROM THE SAN’TONE RIVER BOTTOM
A CULTURAL HISTORY • Volume One: ORIGINS
This is a story of the convergence of the American Indian, African, Mexican, and Celtic cultures in the vicinity of the lower San Antonio River. It is an area of the Coastal Bend that is distinctive for its cultural mix. These groups settled along the river bottom where a source of water was guaranteed. The oral narratives in this book show the enormously complex support system that grew up around the ranches. It was a network of people and communities that created a body of folklore, universal in many respects, that ultimately defines this area of the Coastal Bend.
